Newly-promoted Team Swindon Basketball Club head coach Antonio Wilburn expects his side to thrive in the National Basketball League.

Wilburn’s side were only formed last year but dominated in the Wessex League as they won a league and cup double in spectacular style as they won each and every one of their matches.

Now promoted to National League Division Three South West, Team Swindon will face higher standard opposition but Wilburn is backing his players to make the step up when the season resumes as expected in October.

“All of the hard work has paid off,” said Wilburn. “Myself, the committee, and all the players have been working extremely hard this past season to get this club to where it belongs, which is National League.

“With only one season under us we managed to accomplish a lot, going undefeated, 15-0, and winning the Karl Taylor Cup in the Wessex League was big for the club.

“Now we prepare for the upcoming season which is due to start in October. Making sure we follow all Covid guidelines, we are now able to start training and looking to start where we left off last season.

“The guys are excited as the majority of them have previously played in the National League and are familiar with a lot of the teams in our division.”

Wilburn expects to have “the core” of last season’s double-winning squad at his disposal but also plans to make new additions in the coming weeks.

Despite the step up, Wilburn believes his side can challenge for a top four place this season.

He added: “I am looking to bring back the core guys from last season but I have also been in contact with a few hopeful new additions. There will be a some new faces and talent arriving this season and I am feeling confident if we get these new additions we will be competing for a top four play-off spot.

“At the same time I advise players with playing experience who believe they are ready to take the next step up and compete in National League, to get in contact with us. We are always looking for talented new players and will be hosting trials later this month.”
