Swindon Supermarine secured their play-off place with a 3-0 home win against second-bottom Barnstaple Town at The Webb’s Wood Stadium on Saturday and will now face an away trip to Evesham Utd on Wednesday night in the one-legged semi-final.
In a tense first half, the ball spent the majority of the time in the air as both sides took no chances in defence, with the North Devon side requiring a point from the fixture or for bottom side Bishop Cleeve to lose away at Yate Town in order for them to survive relegation.
After the interval Supermarine sprang out of the blocks quickly in the second half, upping the tempo of play and were soon rewarded on 49 minutes when Brad Gray was on hand to drill home from close range and ease the nerves of the tense Marine crowd.
Gray slammed home his second on 57 minutes after Zak Westlake’s powerful header was parried by visiting keeper Rob Holmes right into the path of Supermarine’s number nine, who made no mistake from six yards out.
Callum Parsons then sealed the victory in front of a crowd of 317, coolly finishing off a fine move on 78 minutes, having received Gray’s deft flick-on before driving past his marker to fire an unstoppable left footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
The victory meant that Marine ended the season in fifth place and with fourth-placed Evesham holding onto a 1-0 home win to AFC Totton, the Swindon side will now travel north to Evesham on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.45 pm) in a winner-takes-all one-legged semi final of the play-offs.
In the other semi-final, Wimborne Town will host Didcot on Bank Holiday Monday.
