Watch this sensation strike scored by Royal Wootton Bassett Town’s Dale Richards in the local derby clash with Fairford Town.
Sam Collier’s Royal Wootton Bassett Town made it two wins out of two in the Hellenic Premier Division after defeating Fairford Town 2-1 at home on Tuesday night, writes Nick Taylor.
Sam Collier’s side continued their red-hot form from Saturday’s 6-1 thrashing of Tuffley Rovers when they caught Jody Bevan’s side napping after just two minutes.
The early breakthrough came when TJ Bohane set up Brad Pagliaroli and his shot rebounded off the crossbar for Josh Shama to bundle over the line.
Fairford gradually worked their way back into the contest as veteran midfielder Freddie Ward’s claims for a penalty, having been clambered all over in the box, were dismissed by referee David Nicholson.
Fairford skipper Lee Smith then weaved through two challenges to fire narrowly over on 22 minutes before the visitors missed a golden opportunity to level on 28 minutes when former Bassett winger Ben Lodge threaded the ball through to John Thomas who’s side-footed effort trickled narrowly wide of Alex Bowers’ goal.
Bassett doubled their tally on 32 minutes when Shama broke down the right then squared the ball back to the on-rushing left back Dale Richards, who smashed an unstoppable 25-yard left foot volley into the top corner of Ben Mitchell’s net.
Gio Wrona almost made it three on 37 minutes, firing a long range effort just over.
Fairford came out for the second half with much more purpose and began pushing Bassett back more into their own half.
Referee Nicholson was at the centre of controversy on 58 minutes when he turned down a second Fairford appeal for a penalty, Richards mistiming his header in the penalty area and appearing to play the ball with his hand instead.
The South Gloucestershire side continued to chase the game, centre half Robbie James heading just wide from a corner, then James looked on disbelief as his towering header from Josh Jones’s free kick on 68 minutes rebounded back off the crossbar before being cleared by a relieved Bassett defence.
As the game went into injury time, Fairford were rewarded for their second half efforts, Lodge’s shot on the turn from the edge of the box looping over the despairing reaches of Bowers to make it 2-1.
In search of an equaliser, Fairford then sent keeper Mitchell up for a last minute corner, which agonisingly went just wide as the final whistle blew to secure three more points for Sam Collier’s side whilst condemning Jody Bevan’s team to a second straight defeat.
Both teams are next involved in F.A Cup (Extra Preliminary Round) action on Saturday, as Bassett travel to Leighton Town and Fairford head to Hadley (Barnet)who’s side are managed by former Tottenham and Swindon Town legend Micky Hazard.
