New Swindon Supermarine signing Matt Liddiard believes he has joined a club that is “going places” and is looking forward to “enjoying” his football again.
Second-half goals from Jerel Ifil, Matt Williams and Stuart Fleetwood ensured Liddiard’s Marine debut got off to a winning start against Staines.
And Liddiard admitted the Southern Premier South’s bottom club proved a tough test for his new side.
“No game is easy,” said Liddiard. “I think mentally the lads went out with the right attitude and the right mentality. To start off with I don’t think it happened how we wanted it to pan out but we’ve gotta be patient. It was more the tempo that we needed to up five or 10 per cent.
“They made it hard for us and we had to work hard for it but it’s going to be like that whether you play top or bottom.
“We created many chances and I think it could easily have been more than 3-0.”
Reflecting on his move from Gloucester City, he admitted it was hard to leave the club but he believes he has joined an exciting project at Supermarine.
“It wasn’t an easy decision but I think at the time I just had to do what’s best for me,” said Liddiard. “You look where Supermarine is, it is striving forward, it’s going places.
“I just wanted to get back playing and enjoying my football again.”
