Fairford Town boss Jody Bevan counted the cost of his side’s slow start against Royal Wootton Bassett Town admitting his side were “miles off it” in a lacklustre first-half performance.
Bevan’s side conceded against Bassett after just two minutes when Josh Shama tucked away a rebound from a TJ Bohane shot.
A wonder strike from Dale Richards made it 2-0 to the hosts, a lead they retained at the break.
Fairford though came back into it in the second half and almost made Bassett pay for a host of missed chances in the dying minutes.
First, Ben Lodge fired home from the edge of the box with just minutes remaining before Fairford flashed a last minute chance agonisingly past the far post in what was the last action of the game.
Bevan was pleased with his side’s second-half display but was left to rue their slow start.
“First half we were miles off it,” admitted Bevan “We found ourselves 2-0 down and Bassett thoroughly deserved it.
“Second half we got into the them, changed the shape a bit and had a damn good go. In the end we very unlucky not to come away with a draw.
“But we left it too late, you have to start games with that desire and not as we were. We were just not at the races in the first half.”
