Shrivenham boss Gareth Davies said his side were deserved winners against Fairford on Tuesday night as they claimed a vital victory in the Hellenic Premier Division.
Goals from Danny Hale and Dan Drewett gave Shrivvy three points in a lively encounter at Cinder Lane which saw Fairford’s Jamie Reid sent off for a headbutt.
Davies also had special praise for Dave Bampton, on-loan from Swindon Supermarine, who put in a commanding performance and “ran the show” in the eyes of the Shrivvy boss.
“I think it is the right result if I am honest,” said Davies. “You know when you come here that you are in for a battle, our lads were up for it. I think that little bit of quality at the end, my honest opinion is that we were the better side and we deserved thre points.
“If you are going to go about headbutting people then you are going to get sent off. It is a red card any day of the week.
“They had a spell, a quarter of an hour, where they were on top, but we just kept working hard.
“Bamps has come in today and run the show. He made a massive difference today.”
A goal in each half gave Shrivenham victory against a Fairford side who had toppled league leaders Brackley Town Saints at the weekend.
Danny Hale gave visitors Shrivenham the lead on 30 minutes, scoring from the penalty spot after Lewis Petrie was brought down in the area.
Fairford were then reduced to 10 men when Jamie Reid was sent off for a headbutt on Hale – the latter receiving a yellow card for his part in the melee.
Shrivenham clinched victory on 88 minutes when Dan Drewett scrambled the ball home from a Sam Ockwell free-kick.
The win lifts Shrivvy up to 16th in the table, three points adrift from Fairford who are 14th.
Both sides face home clashes at the weekend with Shrivenham taking on Bishops Cleeve and Fairford hosting Tuffley Rovers.
