A winning start to life for Team Swindon Basketball Club at the weekend was hailed as a huge success by the club’s players.
Playing their first competitive match, newly-formed Team Swindon secured a 92-70 win against London Aztec Jaguars in front a packed house at The Deanery Academy.
Antonio Wilburn was delighted to begin their Wessex League Division One campaign with victory, saying: “It was a great way to start the season with a win.
“I know our guys have been working hard and couldn’t wait to get back competing so it was good seeing everyone turn up and ready to play.
“The pace of the game did become a little frustrating at times as it seemed slower than what our guys were normally use to competing and at times we found ourselves playing down to the opposition’s level which we spoke about on numerous occasions before entering The Wessex league.
“We know what level of play and standard we should be performing at so as long as we focus on us and trust our system I believe we will have a very successful season.
“It was nice to see the chemistry and unselfishness within the team and that’s something we wanted to make sure we developed from the start since pre season and everyone contributes. Everyone on this team has a role to play and the more we continue to play with one another the more exciting this team will be to watch.”
Matt Ford added: “It was a great feeling to get the first win of the season, not only for the whole team but everybody involved in the new club.
“I felt we started the game well, controlled the tempo, moved the ball well, and created opportunities early for open shots.
“The supporters were brilliant and really got behind the team. We’re passionate about bringing the community together and promoting basketball within Swindon. After playing basketball in Swindon for the last 14 years, seeing a full stand of fans in our new venue was amazing.
“We’re looking forward to the season ahead; there’s a lot of togetherness within the squad and we’ve got high expectations for the season, we’re training hard and well prepared, and the whole club are focused on achieving the goals that have been set.”
Mat North added: “It’s always a great feeling to get the season off to a winning start. I think there is more to come in terms of the performance and we have high expectations for that. Hopefully we can build on the win and continue to improve into our next game.
“Having played basketball in Swindon for over 20 years it was incredible to see a full house at The Deanery. The support was amazing and I hope to see everyone again on November 9th at our next game.”
Team Swindon return to home action on November 9th when they face London Patriots (4.30pm tip).
