Swindon Moto 3 star Max Cook stormed to his first British Talent Cup victory after staging a dramatic last corner overtake on rival Rory Skinner at Donnington Park.

Having secured his first podium of the series on Saturday, Cook went into Sunday’s second race in confident mood and quickly found himself in a battle for the lead with championship rivals Skinner and Thomas Strudwick.

Cook slotted into second place from the start as Strudwick made a good start from pole position while Skinner tracked the leading duo in third.

The leading trio opened up a gap of 2.7 seconds on the rest of the chasing pack before Cook set the fastest lap as he passed Skinner on lap two.

Back at the front, Cook tried to break away from Skinner and Strudwick on lap three as he opened up a 0.847 second lead.

Skinner though was very quick through McLean’s and quickly closed the gap while Strudwick set a new fastest lap.

On lap four Skinner retook the lead but the lead changed hands once again on lap six as Cook passed his rival into Coppice after his rival ran wide at McLean’s.

Cook defended his lead stoutly under extreme pressure from Skinner but with six laps remaining he relinquished the lead at the Old Hairpin.

The Swindon rider continued to pressure Skinner and with four laps to go regained the lead at the Foggy Esses, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process.

Cook led the way going into the final lap, closely flanked by Skinner and Strudwick, who were both waiting to pounce on any mistake.

Skinner then made his move at the Old Hairpin and regained the lead while Strudwick now had his sights on Cook.

With time running out, Cook made his move at the Foggy Esses as he moved alongside Skinner and forced his way through on the final bend to take a dramatic victory.

Cook’s win takes him up to third place in the overall standings and firmly in contention for the British Talent Cup title with four rounds remaining.

Strudwick leads the way at the top of the table with 57 points while Skinner is on 51 and Cook now has 45 points.

The next round at Snetterton takes place on the weekend of June 15th.
