Ben Whincup and Todd Johnson both admitted Swindon St George must raise their game ahead of this weekend’s trip to Bristol Sonics.
Swindon St George required a late penalty goal from Sam Williams to make sure of victory against Bath last Saturday as they creeped home 26-18.
And head coach Whincup has demanded an improvement ahead of the reigning champions’ trip to Bristol.
“We made a lot harder work of it than we needed to,” said Whincup, reflecting on the win against Bath.
“We should have been more clinical. This is a bit of a wake-up call and we really need to step it up now ahead of a tough away game in Bristol.”
Saturday’s player of the match, Johnson, added: “Defensive wise in our half we were solid, they weren’t getting through but attacking wise we need to improve on that.”
Sam Collins got Swindon off to the perfect start after he breached the Bath defence with just five minutes on the clock with Connor Tomley adding the extras for an early 6-0 lead.
But the reigning champions were pegged back almost immediately when the visitors went over in the corner and added the conversion.
Stu Hannah then crashed over on 15 minutes before Florin Palcau extended St George’s lead to 14-6.
Swindon went further ahead just before the break when Hannah scored his second of the game with Palcau adding the extras to secure a 20-6 lead at half-time.
Despite looking in complete control of the match, the home side struggled to find their stride in the second half and allowed Bath to hit back with another converted try.
Josh Williams then scored to restore parity for the hosts but another good phase of play from Bath saw them score another converted try.
With Bath now trailing 24-18 and just one converted try away from levelling matters, Swindon were eventually forced to take a penalty goal to secure victory with Sam Williams adding the crucial two points.
