Swindon Shock head coach David Colclough believes this season’s squad of players is one of the best he has ever had at the club and they have their eyes on “winning the lot”.

The Shock coach was delighted with his side’s start to the new season as they came one point away from breaking the 100-point mark against Dorset Storm.

Colclough’s side may have been favourites on paper to win this National Cup clash but Shock found themselves shorthanded for the clash with a host of players unavailable for the tie.

Division Four outfit Storm edged out Shock in the opening period as they led 22-19 but thereafter it was the Swindon side who took control.

A dominant second quarter though saw Shock storm into a 10-point lead as they won the session 24-11.

More of the same followed in the third quarter as they won the session 27-22 to take a commanding 70-55 lead going into the final session.

And despite being shorthanded it wasn’t Shock who tired with the Swindon side winning the final quarter 29-14 to wrap up a 99-69 success, falling agonisingly short of the 100-point mark.

Colclough hailed his side, saying: “We knew we were shorthanded and we would have to dig deep, so everyone is buzzing with that.

“We dug in and we could see the veteran players step up and then we started to pull away.”

The Shock coach also believes he has a group of players capable of big things this season, describing his squad as “one of the strongest he has had”.

“It is one of the strongest teams I think I have ever had, especially since I moved into Swindon. We want to win it all.

“I think last season, getting promoted to Division Three we lost a lot of games in the last minute. Getting that experience, especially for some of the young guys, now we going ‘hang on, we can beat anyone’.”

Leading the way with the scoring for Swindon Shock against Storm as Mantas Kmita with 29 points while Ed Potter (25) and Matt North (17) also chipped in with fine totals.

Cheshire Wire await Shock in the next round which will be at home on Sunday, September 30th. Prior to that game though, Swindon will begin their Division Three South league campaign when they host Cardiff Met Archers on Saturday, September 29th.
