Swindon Supermarine’s new signing Babourcarr Jarra is relishing the opportunity to prove himself with the newly-promoted Southern League Premier South side, writes Nick Taylor.
The 26-year-old defender played a pivotal role in Thatcham Town winning both the Hellenic League Premier Division and FA Vase and adds more depth to Lee Spalding’s side ahead of the new season.
Jarra, who lives in Swindon because of his job as an occupational therapist at First Great Western, said the move was perfect for him.
“At the end of last season, with more travelling being involved now that Thatcham have been promoted to the Southern League, I wanted to join a club closer to home for me and the Marine ground is only 13 minutes away!
“The pitch looks brilliant, the groundsman must take great pride in the playing surface and The SwinDome is perfect.
“My year and a half at Thatcham was a really good time but I’ve got to challenge myself more now.
“I know I’m good enough to play at this level. For a side to be successful you need competition for places and I don’t have any problem with that.”
Supermarine boss Spalding is delighted with his new arrival after fending off interest from a string of other clubs.
“He’s another positive signing for the club,” said Spalding. “Babz will provide good competition, he’s quick, strong in the air and is comfortable on the ball, a natural centre half and will keep everyone on their toes!.”
Jarra was named man of the match for Thatcham during their FA Vase victory over Stockton over Wembley and has previously played for Windsor, Beaconsfield, AFC Hayes, Chalfont St. Peter and Flackwell Heath.
The defender is expected to be involved in Supermarine’s next pre-season friendly on Saturday when Spalding’s troops face National League South side Wealdstone (3pm kick-off).
