Looking back at the extended highlights of the West of England Super Fives Grand Final between Swindon St George and All Golds in the continuation of our Flashback series.
St George made a strong start to the final which was held at Ding Crusaders Rugby Football Club in Bristol as they attempted to retain their Grand Final title.
Having missed a couple of early good chances to score, Scott Douglas powered over in the corner on 21 minutes to send St George into the lead.
Rhys Evans converted the try to give Swindon a 6-0 lead.
Swindon failed to extend their lead, again despite putting pressure on the All Golds line, letting their rivals off the hook.
All Golds hit back on 30 minutes when Sam Hodge went over, his try went unconverted though.
Leading 6-4 at the break, Swindon had the edge going into the second half but conceded six minutes after the re-start when Dieter Thomas scored to make it 10-6.
Douglas it back for Swindon soon after as he tied the scores up at 10-10 and thereafter it was a close-knit affair.
Two quick lapses by St George though eventually cost them dear as Callum Merrit and Thomas burst over the Swindon whitewash on 57 and 62 minutes.
Trailing 22-10 though, Swindon hit back when Josh Verity scored on 75 minutes to make it 22-14.
St George pushed hard until the final whistle but just couldn’t find a way past the All Golds defence.
Despite the defeat, the result brings to an end another successful season for Swindon St George, who continue to impress in the West of England Rugby League.
