Swindon St George went one better than last year when they lost to Portsmouth in the West of England Grand Final by clinching a hard-fought victory against Oxford Cavaliers.
St George got off to a flying start when Charles Burnett went over in the corner early on with skipper Connor Tomley scoring a superb conversion.
Oxford though hit back and were in front 10-6 after scoring two unconverted tries.
Andreas Bonicelli sneaked over for St George’s second try of the day with Tomley’s conversion ensuring they retook the lead by 12-10.
The Cavaliers fought back once again though and were back in front, 14-12, thanks to another unconverted try.
A topsy-turvey first half finished with Swindon on top though as Ben Bridson raced through to score and Tomley, again, adding the extras.
Leading 18-14 at the break, Swindon kicked on in the second half as they raced into a 30-14 lead.
First, it was captain Tomley who took advantage of some sloppy play by Oxford to score under the posts. He then added the conversion to make it 24-14.
Tommy White was the next St George man to score with Tomley’s extras making it 30-14 and effectively wrapping up the win.
Oxford pulled the score back to 30-18 with another unconverted try but it was Greig O’Brien who burst over the whitewash late on to ultimately secure victory.
With Tomley adding the extras to O’Brien’s try, Swindon completed a 36-18 success and a first-ever Grand Final success.
